I have had odd things happen if there wasn’t a user with the
numerical ID 501. Your mileage may vary. IDs get assigned in the
order the accounts are created, starting at 501. There are countless
other IDs below that threshold, and there are hard-coded defaults in
the OS to keep them from showing up, except within NetInfo Manager
and other admin-level tools.

Dear Keith and Paul

Sorry but that didn’t work. The Software Restore discs that came with
this particular computer contain a Mac OS 9.2 program that doesn’t
have a menu, for some reason. So perhaps I have done everything that
it is possible to do with this machine.

Regards

Thanks everyone for the advice. I decided to boot from the
installation CD that came with the computer, but it would only let me
    do a Software Restore.

I know it looks as though that’s all it’ll let you do, but It’ll let
you do more than that if you poke around a bit in the menus; it’ll let
you run Disk Utility for instance, which is where you can erase,
  format, partition etc.

best wishes,

That looks interesting, I use After Effects and have to sometimes put stuff into Flash to compress it or mess around a little more and I find flash to be a bit ‘heavy’ I wonder how (and if) this does all that - must be worth trying out the demo and the purchase price is pretty good.

I agree that CSSEdit is a more well-rounded editor (I own and use it)
but I’ve become so enamored of Coda’s UI that I’m usually willing to
accept the somewhat simpler - but still very useful - CSS editor. We
have it bad, don’t we? Having 2 such nice editor options to choose
from. These are good times.

The lithium batteries on most modern Macs last 5-7 years. It sounds a lot like that’s your problem, and they are around $8 to replace so it would be a cheap troubleshooting step to try.
