inconsistency in tool retention
I don’t understand why some tools (pen, text) keep you in the tool after you have used it, and others rectangle, dimension lines, scissors change you to the select tool. Most programs I have used keep a tool until you tell the app you don’t want to be in that tool. A global pref to keep you in the tool would be great.
In illustrator they make it very easy to get to the zoomin, zoomout, scrolling hand and select tool by making those all accessible by pressing combinations of spacebar option and command.
Another popular method is to make the spacebar toggle you between the last two tools, so you can easily switch back and forth between the rectangle and select tool.

If you right-click on the tool menu, lock appears. Choosing lock will secure your current tool (no tool jokes please ;-)
You can clear the lock by just choosing the pointer (selection) tool again

The problem with that is you have to do it for each tool you use, and every time you change tools it erases the lock. You should be able to turn off this “feature”.
It’s meant to work in a manner similar to MacDraw and similar apps.
FWIW, you can also lock a tool by holding down the command key while selecting it.
I can understand wanting to conform to standards and traditions, but this is a behavior that is not common in modern apps and the last version of MacDraw that came out was in 1994, 14 years ago.
