Website Updates Notification, How To?

I recently finished building my website, http://www.jamiejonesphoto.co.uk/

Now I don’t intend to make major changes to the website, but I would like people to keep visiting every now and then so that they don’t forget me. I have created a News Updates page where I intend to add a picture of the month and some waffle about what ever might be relevant at the time.

I was wondering how I could set a system to notify people that this page has been updated?

I have seen RSS Feeds on other websites and didn’t know what I could do in Freeway?

What problem will I face in setting this up?

Is it complicated?

At the moment every time I want to add an update, I duplicate the original latest news page, rename the copy and edit the original with the new information, then create a link and a screen grab for the archive page. Is there a better way of doing this?

Not sure if that is what I am after. Firstly I would be looking to add some thing to an existing page, where as this says that I need to create a differnt page which has to be a xml page and I can’t have html on the News Update page.

Surely I am not trying to move content, I am purely trying to notify people a webpage has been updated.

It also is not very good if safari won’t work with it.

Let me shed some light on what the ends to these instructions are for you then :)

These instructions will give you an RSS feed which will look something like this:

http://www.softpress.com/movies/FreewayMoments.xml

RSS feeds can either be viewed in a browser, or added to a feed reader. Most endusers of RSS feeds subscribe to feeds on sites they want to follow. Their feed reader will then show them when the sites they are following have updated, and show them the entry that the RSS feed delivers.

This method may not be the one for your exact needs but it certainly worth considering I think.

There are services that will send an email but all the ones I know (such as the one at Feedburner [http://feedburner.google.com]) are based off that initial RSS feed. With Feedburner, you would point the service to your RSS Feed, and it would give you a code to put on your page so people could subscribe to the email notification. The email would get sent automatically.

I think you are probably looking for something much simpler than that though; it sounds like you’d be happier with something like a simple newsletter-type set up. Unfortunately, I myself cannot think of one to suggest right now. I’m sure somebody here will have an idea though! I’ll let you know if anything comes to mind.

Hi Snapper, RSS is a pull technology rather than a push one. That is to say that subscribers pull the content from the server - much like viewing a web page. E-mail, on the other hand, is a push technology and you get whatever you are sent. I added a news section to the FreewayActions.com site a while ago and rather than adding static content I opted for a simple content management system that handles this part of the site for me. The section (http://www.freewayactions.com/news/) is run using a free script called PHP News (http://www.hotscripts.com/listing/news-system-58363/ ) which you install on the server and style to match the rest of your site. Once installed you can then add content directly through your web browser without having to worry about links or uploading new pages. Another benefit is that PHP News automatically generates an RSS feed from my content. Setting up a system like this will take a bit of investment to get right but should benefit you in the long run. It is also worth checking if your ISP offers pre-installed systems like this that you can make use of on your account without having to do the setting up yourself. Regards, Tim.
