Mac-based Web Hosting
My Mac user group, HAAUG, is looking to cut expenses by changing their internet hosting (currently over $4500/yr because they are hosting their own servers).
Ideally, they would go with Mac-based hosting as MUGs think they should use that. Does anyone know of good Mac-based web hosting? If you are in a MUG, do you know what your group uses?

Also look at Media Temple http://www.mediatemple.net/. Not Mac-based but an interesting outfit.

MacMiniColo is another. I think Paul Dunning hosts with them. You send them a Mini, they plug it into their rack, and you have your own co-located server. You are root, you can do whatever you like, run whatever server software you want.
If your site isn’t heavily trafficked, you could also host your own server at home. I have an (eBay special) Xserve G5 and an aging G4 tower in Marathon rack ears that I use for this sort of thing. They are running Leopard Server and Tiger Server, respectively. They keep my basement warm in the winter, too. Of course this means you will need to have a fairly robust network connection, so you do end up paying either way.

Just SL a couple years ago and more recently Media Temple. My 30-day trial with MT was positive - though do your research, people seem to love or hate their Grid Service. I really would have liked to have stayed with them but I couldn’t justify the cost at the time. Still, I would consider going back if and when I can afford to.
I always have a desire to use a Mac host so I tend to collect a lot of bookmarks, just in case. It comes down to cost, again, I can get more for less $ with a Linux plan. Perhaps that will change some day.

I run Mac servers here because they’re relatively simple for a mortal to administer. But for reliable high performance AMP hosting, you really ought to place a Linux or long-pants Unix server quite a few rungs above Mac OS X Server on your decision ladder. Mac OS X Server is tuned as a workgroup server (all things to all people, with a hard candy shell), and changing those priorities so it will spend most of its time tending to the Web and less of its time being friendly to its (part-time) administrator is relatively arcane compared with any of the other Unix/Linux variants.
I’m a hard-core Mac fanboy, but do I host my customers’ sites on Mac OS X Server? Not any more. (Once was plenty: the Softpress site ran on MOSXS from 2003 to 2006-7, and while it worked fine when it worked, it was something of a learning experience for all concerned. The company that ran that service seems to have disappeared from the planet, so I won’t mention them by name.)
If you’re spending other people’s money, you can’t go wrong with Joyent. Solaris virtual servers running on a mainframe-class server cluster. 24/7 support that is second to none. Anything you want — for a price.

The HAAUG Servers are a couple of Macs running X Server. There isn’t anything being done on them that requires high horsepower, except maybe the Mail server since so many of our users get spammed pretty nicely.
I’m one of the admins, and I do like the X Server Admin tools quite a bit. The DNS portion sucks, because it’s clearly not designed to host many domains, and they made it worse in Leopard Server instead of better.
One of the nice things about running X Server for the MUG is that it allows us to give or sell our users some stuff beyond the normal web hosting, like storage space and whatnot, aka workgroup features, even though they’re using them individually. But, not a lot of people take advantage of that, so it’s probably not worth trying to keep vs. the money we’d save.
And I do remember who that now-MIA host was. :)
