[Pro] Newb needs help
Hello… I recently purchased FW Pro 5. I have a client who would like to start a used car dealership website and be able to change his inventory on his end. Which CMS would work best (I don’t have a lot of experience with them) for me and my client? Are there any other non-CMS actions that might work as well?
Thanks in advance! Jon

12 Jan 2010, 8:21 pmWhat type of and how much control does your client need over the content? What’s the client’s (and your) technical comfort level? There are a great many CMS options from dead-simple: WebYep, to large enterprise-level. It really depends on the project requirements and you and your client’s willingness/ability to learn and accept a certain level of technical know-how. Ease-of-use and features are mutually exclusive, there’s a price to pay either way. Once you know what’s needed you can better determine the appropriate CMS.

12 Jan 2010, 9:42 pmTodd: Thanks for the tip. I’m not completely savvy when it comes to CMS and WebYep looks like it my solve my problem. My client probably is fairly tech-comfortable, but not with web design skills (or HTML, etc.). Since there’s already an action for WebYep and it’s a reasonably priced CMS, I’ll probably go that direction. Thanks again for your insights! Jon

Bear in mind that this could also be treated like a standard shopping cart site - just without the Buy Button - and most of them are easy for the user to add/edit products - in your case cars.

I may have to investigate the shopping cart idea. (Mal?) and see if that works just as well as a CMS. Thanks for the tip! Jon

12 Jan 2010, 10:22 pmFor that amount of vehicles WebYep will be ideal for this project.
Forget Mals - it is not a cart as such - more of a payment processor/gateway so not suitable but your web host may well have a a few options bundled with your hosting package.

What about a dealership of 200 + ?
what do you recommend? I have a dealership that NEEDS a new site - I looked at the threads and someone mentioned: http://www.stivasoft.com/car-dealer-script/index.php
but as one of the salesman just said - too plain.

31 Jul 2010, 1:59 pmGood Morning,
I have been following this thread - and the link that is given for an auto dealership plug in - is great for a smaller dealership of small amounts of cars. also - as one of the salesman just said - it is too plain for this large dealership/

I found: http://www.automanager.com/ seems to be able to be a plug in to a site..
will it work with a FWP site?
Thank you!

With a developer licence you are free to change/add the scripts to a look you prefer - and at only $99 that seems quite reasonable.
I haven’t looked into it that much but it would appear to work standalone but they also say
using either a PHP include file or an iframe code you can virtually put the car sale listing on any valid HTML web page
So integration with FW should be straightforward.
More importantly than the look is whether it has all the functionality that your client needs. Looks can be changed but adding a missing feature would be problematic.

31 Jul 2010, 5:27 pmYou can edit the the CSS in the script from Stiva and make it your own. It’s also very easy to implement with FW, one line of code in your FW page. I have not personally used this script but I have used others from Stiva and they will tweak a script or add feature for a very reasonable fee.

These are a couple of examples but they do not seem to have had much tweaking.
Contact StivaSoft and see if they can provide more links.
